Ukrainian authorities describe the Russian missile and drone attack as "massive" with several areas of Kiev hit.
Kiev has faced heavy Russian shelling overnight, with two children among four people killed, Ukrainian officials said early Thursday.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the drone and missile attack on the Ukrainian capital was "massive", with military officials confirming on Telegram that at least 30 people had been injured.
A five-story building collapsed in the Darnytski district, and a fire was also reported in a multi-story residential building in the neighboring Dnipro district.
The wave of missiles comes after more than 100,000 Ukrainian homes were left without electricity by recent Russian drone attacks on energy infrastructure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday.
In a Telegram post, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kiev military administration, said one of the children killed was a 14-year-old girl. At least five children were injured in the latest drone strikes. Three people were pulled alive from the rubble and it is likely that there are still people under the rubble.
He noted that more than 20 neighborhoods were targeted, with many buildings, including a kindergarten, engulfed in flames.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced on Telegram that approximately 500 rescue teams and 1,000 police officers are working simultaneously in Kiev.
"The rescue operation involved climbers, dog handlers, psychologists, engineers, firefighters and rescue personnel. Robotic equipment is being actively used to clear the area so that rescue teams can work faster. Every minute of our emergency services' work is aimed at saving lives and supporting those who have suffered the most from Russian terror. Fragments of bodies have also been found, but identification is still difficult," he wrote.
Three and a half years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the fighting on the ground shows no signs of abating.
Meanwhile at 5:30 a.m. today, an explosion was heard in Zaporizhia after Russian forces attacked one of the city's industrial facilities, causing a fire. The Ukrinform news agency reported this, citing the head of the regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, on Telegram.
"Russians attacked one of the city's businesses. A fire broke out as a result of the attack," he wrote. There are currently no reports of casualties.
Last night, Russian troops carried out a targeted attack on civilian passenger transport. In particular, the fleet of Intercity+ high-speed trains was attacked.
"Thanks to the coordinated action of railway workers, the fire at the facility was extinguished. One train was severely damaged. The workers were safely in the shelters ahead of time. We are doing everything possible to ensure that the maximum number of trains can run. No trains will be canceled: for this reason, we are deploying replacement means of transport," Ukrzaliznytsia, the company that manages Ukraine's railway network, reported on Telegram.
