The United States has issued a security alert about the possibility of Iranian sleeper cells being activated abroad. According to a federal notification distributed to law enforcement agencies, encrypted communications suspected of Iranian origin have been intercepted and could serve as an “operational signal” for sleeper agents outside Iranian territory.
According to a report by ABC News, the alert is based on a preliminary analysis of a broadcast deemed “likely of Iranian origin,” which was distributed in several countries shortly after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian supreme leader was killed on February 28 in an Israeli strike.
The intercepted message was encrypted and intended for "secret recipients" who possess the key to decrypt it. This communication system is typically used to give instructions to covert operators or sleeper agents, without using the internet or mobile networks.
US authorities stress that, despite the alert, there are currently no operational threats linked to a specific location. However, the notice asks security agencies to increase monitoring of suspicious radio frequencies to identify any potential similar communications.
