Colombia has reacted sharply after US airstrikes on suspected drug smuggling ships off the coast of South America.
The reaction came after the Pentagon announced two new strikes that caused five fatalities, while dozens of deaths have been reported since September.
The Colombian government, through the Foreign Ministry and President Gustavo Petro, accused Washington of violating international law, calling the attacks "murder."
The US justifies the actions as part of an operation against drug cartels operating from Venezuela, but countries in the region see this as a dangerous escalation.
Experts warn that the strikes, which have also targeted Colombian-flagged vessels, could spread the conflict and damage US-Latin American bilateral cooperation. Tensions have been particularly high following the killing of Colombian fisherman Alejandro Carranza, whose family denies any involvement in the trafficking.
President Trump has defended the campaign as necessary to fight drugs and has warned of the possibility of expanding operations to ground targets. The situation has opened an international debate on the limits of military action, the sovereignty of states and respect for international law in the war on drugs.
