The United States has sanctioned five European figures, including former European Union Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.

According to the decision, Breton is banned from entering American territory.

The US State Department has justified the measures by stating that the actions of these individuals constitute "censorship" and harm American interests, particularly towards US-based technology platforms.

In a reaction on social media, Thierry Breton described the decision as a form of political pressure.

"Is the McCarthy witch hunt back?" he asked, referring to the period of anti-communist persecution in the US during the 1950s.

Breton defended the law he promoted, the Digital Services Act (DSA), which Washington claims has harmed American interests.

"It should be remembered that 90% of the European Parliament, our democratically elected institution, as well as all 27 member states, have unanimously approved the Digital Services Act. To our American friends, we say that censorship is not where you think it is," he declared.

In an official announcement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the State Department is taking "decisive action against five individuals who have led organized efforts to force US platforms to censor American views that do not align with their own."

Rubio described them as "radical activists" and stressed that their actions, including the use of non-governmental organizations, have directly targeted American companies. According to him, the presence or activity of these individuals in the US could have "potentially serious negative consequences for American foreign policy."

The list of people affected by the visa ban also includes Clare Melford of the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), Imran Ahmed of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), and two executives of the German organization HateAid. US officials accused these organizations of using funds to promote censorship and “blacklist” American media outlets and voices.
