The plane carrying the Chief of General Staff of the Libyan Armed Forces, General Mohamed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ankara.
In a statement by the head of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord in Libya, Abdelhamid Dbeiba, it is reported that Lieutenant General Al-Fituri Gabeel, Director of the Military Equipment Production Service, Brigadier General Mahmoud al-Qutawi, Advisor to the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Professor Mohamed al-Asawi Diab, and Press Office photographer Mohamed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub were also on the plane.
The leadership of the Libyan armed forces was on a one-day visit to Ankara, where he met with the Turkish Chief of General Staff, General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, and the Minister of Defense, Yasar Guler.
General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad was one of the most important military figures in the Tripoli government.
After the fall of Gaddafi, Al-Haddad assumed important roles in the Libyan army and in September 2020 was appointed Chief of General Staff. He was appointed by Fayez al-Sarraj and was among the most powerful military figures in the Tripoli government. He has developed extensive military ties, particularly with Turkey. In August 2021, he visited a Turkish frigate off the coast of Libya, as part of Turkish naval operations.
In March 2023, he signed a military agreement with Italy in Rome for the training of Libyan special forces.
With the US, in July 2024, he met with AFRICOM leadership to discuss supporting the unification of the Libyan army and strengthening border security.
