Two police officers and another person have been killed after a car bomb exploded in Moscow.
Two traffic police officers and a third person have been killed by a car explosion in Moscow, Russia's Investigative Committee, which investigates serious crimes, announced early Wednesday.
According to The Guardian, the Committee said in a statement that “an explosive device was activated” when officers approached a “suspicious person” near their police vehicle on Yeletskaya Street, south of the capital.
According to officials, the scene has been cordoned off and CCTV footage is being reviewed.
Images broadcast by Russian television showed a cordoned off area and a heavy police presence. Witnesses were quoted as describing an explosion that occurred at around 1:30 a.m. local time.
A top Russian general, Gen. Fanil Sarvarov , was killed this week when a bomb exploded under his car south of Moscow, according to Russian investigators. They described the death of the head of the operational training directorate of the Russian army's general staff as a possible assassination carried out by Ukrainian intelligence services. Sarvarov's car exploded as he was driving along Yaseneva Street at around 7:00 a.m. Monday.
Russian officials and prominent pro-war figures have called for swift retaliation for the third bombing attack in Moscow in the past year that killed a senior Russian officer linked to the invasion of Ukraine.
