Hungarian spy ring operating in Ukraine dismantled

Ukrainian security services arrested two Ukrainian citizens who they said worked for Hungarian military intelligence near the countries' shared border.

The agents were gathering information about the number of troops, military bases, weapons and combat aircraft in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine, as well as checking how the local population would react if Hungarian soldiers crossed the border, SBU spokesman Artem Dehtiarenko said in a statement on Friday.

The relationship between Budapest and Kiev is extremely tense, partly due to the close relationship that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has maintained with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, as the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine continues.

"The agents were also looking for weak points in the region's ground and air defenses, as well as studying the political views of the local population. In particular: how they would behave if a peacekeeping force, especially Hungarian troops, entered the region," Dehtiarenko added.

As evidence, the SBU showed a video in which two Ukrainian citizens from Zakarpattia, a man and a woman — both former members of the Ukrainian military — admit to working for Hungarian military intelligence, collecting information in exchange for a reward.

"The results of the investigation showed that their curator was a staff officer of Hungarian military intelligence. The SBU had already identified him," Dehtiarenko said.

Senior officials in Budapest rejected the accusations from Kiev.

"This should be considered Ukrainian propaganda that should be treated with caution. As soon as we receive any official information, we can deal with it," Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told local media outlet ATV.

If convicted, both suspects face life imprisonment for treason during wartime.
