Alliance spokeswoman Allison Hart stressed that NATO stands by its member countries and condemns the attacks that, according to her, Iran is carrying out in the region.
"We condemn Iran's targeting of Turkey. NATO stands firmly with all allies, including Turkey, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks across the region," spokeswoman Allison Hart said.
She added that the alliance remains fully prepared to guarantee the protection of member countries.
"Our deterrence and defense posture remains strong in all areas, including air and missile defense," Hart said.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Defense, NATO air defense systems have shot down an Iranian ballistic missile that was launched towards Turkish airspace. Turkish authorities have announced that they will hold consultations with NATO and other partners regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, Ankara has warned that it will react to any threat to its territory.
"Every step taken to protect our territory and airspace will be decisive and without hesitation. We remind you that we reserve the right to respond to any hostile attitude towards our country," the Turkish authorities said in a statement.
