The statement by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has sparked a strong reaction from United States President Donald Trump, after he openly criticized US military action against Iran.
Sánchez described the operation as a unilateral and dangerous action, emphasizing that it constitutes a violation of international law and increases the risk of escalating the conflict in the Middle East.
The Spanish government also expressed practical opposition to the operation, rejecting Washington's request to use the joint military bases in Rota and Morón for strikes against Iran. Authorities in Madrid argued that such an action has no clear international legal basis and has not been approved by the UN.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stressed that the European Union should focus on reducing tensions, diplomatic dialogue and resuming negotiations to avoid a wider conflict.
Madrid's decision prompted an immediate reaction from US President Donald Trump, who warned that the United States could cut off trade relations with Spain and criticized the decision to deny the use of military bases.
According to international media reports, diplomatic tension has also increased due to Sánchez's critical stance towards military actions in the region and his calls for a diplomatic solution to the crisis with Iran.
However, the Spanish government has maintained that the priority should be to de-escalate the conflict and respect international law to avoid further destabilization of the region.
