While negotiations are taking place in diplomatic channels, Ukraine experienced what could be considered the most massive airstrikes since the beginning of the occupation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly raised the possibility of a personal meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky within days. While Moscow insists that its capital be the venue for the meeting, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has reported a willingness to hold talks outside of Russia. Zelensky, on the other hand, made it clear that he does not rule out a meeting with Putin, but only under conditions that do not create the impression of capitulation.
At the same time, international pressure is mounting on both sides to finally engage in direct talks. US President Donald Trump is trying to broker a meeting after his summit with Putin in August, but he is running into the problem of the country. Kiev considers a visit to Moscow politically and symbolically completely unacceptable, while Putin himself, at least publicly, sees no reason to travel elsewhere.
Putin initially stated in Beijing, where he attended several events over four days, including China's grand Victory Day military parade, that he had "never refused" to meet with Zelensky, as long as the conversation was well-prepared and promised "positive results." Trump asked him, Newsweek reports, to consider such a meeting, to which he replied: "Yes, it is possible. Ultimately, if Zelensky is ready, let him come to Moscow, then the meeting will take place."
A little later, at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin repeated: "If someone really wants to meet with us, we are ready. The best place for this is the capital of the Russian Federation, the hero city of Moscow." To many observers, this underscores the staging of Putin, who insists on being the host despite war crimes in the neighboring country.
Zelensky on Putin: "He can come to Kiev"
According to The Hill, Zelensky again rejected the offer and countered: "He can come to Kiev. I can't go to Moscow when my country is under missile fire, under attack, every day. I can't go to the capital of this terrorist." Thus, he made it clear that a meeting was only possible under conditions that did not promote Russian propaganda.
At the same time, Zelenskyy accused Putin of deliberately delaying the meeting. "If you don't want a meeting to take place, then invite me to Moscow," he said at a press conference in Paris, according to Newsweek. He thus suggested that the Kremlin was simply postponing the talks to buy time.

Regional escalation and Kiev's counterattacks
Heavy attacks also occurred in Odessa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhia and Krivyi Rih. According to NTV, Poland sent military aircraft to the border area after explosions were reported near the border.
At the same time, Ukrainian drones hit the Ilsky oil refinery in Russia's southern Krasnodar Territory. The regional administration reported a fire that was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries. However, the counterattacks underscore Ukraine's deliberate attempt to put pressure on Russian infrastructure.
The crucial question, given the situation in the Ukraine war, is and remains whether Kiev, Washington, and European partners can secure a neutral venue for talks.
