All flights of some of the major American airlines such as Delta, United and American Airlines have been canceled on Friday morning due to communication network problems, US Aviation authorities have announced.

Trains in the UK have told customers to expect delays amid "widespread IT issues".

Southern, Thameslink, Gatwick Express and Great Northern - all four Govia Thameslink Railway brands - said they were experiencing problems.

“Our IT teams are actively investigating to determine the root cause of the issue.

"We are unable to access driver diagrams in certain locations, leading to possible cancellations at short notice, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks.

“Additionally, other key systems, including our real-time customer information platforms, are also affected.

"We will provide additional updates when we have the opportunity. In the meantime, please check your travel regularly before traveling."

German and Spanish airports are also reporting problems.

Berlin Airport has said it is experiencing check-in delays due to a "technical fault".

The London Stock Exchange is among the businesses affected by the global outage of IT systems around the world.
