Desperate efforts continue to find the bodies of victims in Valencia, Spain, who were trapped in tons of mud and debris from the deadly storm.

Four days after tragic floods left at least 211 dead and plunged the country into mourning, the Spanish government announced today the deployment of 10,000 extra soldiers and police to southeastern Spain to help those affected and search for the missing.

In total, another 5,000 troops will be deployed on the ground, of which 4,000 today and 1,000 tomorrow morning, according to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's announcement.

This number reaches 7,500 soldiers mobilized in the damaged areas and is "the largest deployment of the armed forces that has ever taken place in Spain in peacetime", the head of government said.

According to Sanchez, the troops will be joined by nearly 5,000 other police and gendarmes to support the 5,000 colleagues already on the ground.

Aid is eagerly awaited in some locations still dealing with a state of chaos.

The bad weather "caused the biggest natural disaster in the recent history of our country", said the prime minister, emphasizing that the number of floods now reaches "211 dead".

According to the government, the priority for soldiers and police remains to find the missing and restore roads and infrastructure to enable the "delivery" of aid and the resumption of "essential services".
