The United States National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, and his deputy, Alex Wong, have resigned, according to recent reports in American media. The development comes after a series of controversies involving Waltz, most notably a scandal related to the leak of sensitive military information through the messaging app Signal.
In March 2025, Mike Waltz was embroiled in a major scandal when he mistakenly added The Atlantic magazine's editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, to a Signal chat group where senior Trump administration officials were discussing plans for military strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The incident was considered a serious breach of national security, prompting fierce criticism from Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans, who called for a thorough investigation into the incident. Waltz took full responsibility for the mistake, calling it "shameful" and admitting that he had created the chat group. However, President Donald Trump initially defended his adviser, stating that no classified information was shared and that the strikes on the Houthis had been carried out successfully.
Despite Trump's initial support, recent reports indicate that dissatisfaction with Waltz's performance had been growing within the administration. According to journalist Mark Halperin, who cited three sources close to the White House, the decision to remove Waltz and Wong had been made and was expected to be made official soon.
Political analysts suggest the resignations may reflect growing pressure on the Trump administration to address criticism of its handling of national security issues. The Signal incident, combined with other geopolitical tensions, such as the Ukraine negotiations and Middle East policy, has highlighted the need for a more stable and credible team on the National Security Council.
While the White House is expected to officially confirm the resignations, attention has now turned to potential appointments to replace Waltz and Wong.
