US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned Iran that it will face consequences for supporting Houthi rebels, a group that controls northern Yemen and attacks ships in the Red Sea in solidarity with the Palestinians.
Hegseth's warning comes as the US has resumed talks with Iran over its nuclear program.
It is reported that American and Iranian negotiators will meet again in Rome on Saturday.
"Message to Iran: We see your support for the Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing. You know full well what the US military is capable of doing – and you have been warned. You will pay," Hegseth wrote on X.
Hegseth later, on his personal X account, reposted Donald Trump's message on Truth Social from March, in which the US president said he would hold Iran responsible for any attacks carried out by the Houthis.
Meanwhile, the Iranian leader previously stated that the Houthis are acting independently.
The US has carried out strikes on more than 1,000 targets since it stepped up strikes against the group in March. The US military has increased its resources in recent weeks to bolster the Middle East.
The Pentagon has also deployed six B-2 bombers to the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, which experts say is an ideal position for operations in the Middle East.
In addition, the US currently has two aircraft carriers in the Middle East and has moved air defense systems from Asia to the region.
