According to NBC News, the US president has privately discussed the possibility of a limited military contingent for strategic operations.
United States President Donald Trump has privately expressed serious interest in deploying U.S. troops to Iran, NBC News reported, citing two U.S. officials, a former official and a person briefed on discussions within the administration.
Sources say the president has discussed the idea of deploying a small military contingent for specific strategic operations. The discussions do not relate to a full-scale ground invasion of Iran, but rather limited operations that could be carried out by special forces.
Trump has been discussing the idea with Republican advisers and officials outside the White House as he has laid out his vision for a post-war Iran. According to sources, he envisions a scenario in which Iran's uranium reserves are brought under control and a new Iranian government cooperates with the US on oil production.
The White House responded to the reports by stating that the article relied on anonymous sources who are not part of the president's national security team. A White House spokeswoman stated that Trump always keeps all options open.
Publicly, Trump has not ruled out deploying U.S. troops on the ground in Iran, although military operations so far have been limited to airstrikes. A decision to deploy troops would significantly expand the scope of the war and increase the risk to U.S. forces.
