One of the witnesses at the scene was Albanian-American Vatan Cana. He recorded several images during the attack. VOA contacted him a few hours ago to share what he saw.
He told journalist Garentina Kraja about the chaotic scenes after the shooting, including footage of Mr. Trump injured as he left the scene.
Description of what he saw
"We were some friends, we went from New York to Butler. When we went there, there were a lot of people, traffic on the road, there was very, very heavy security. Until we entered the rally inside, we went through security. They checked everything, including our body and what we had with us. When we entered, we went further, to be honest, we were probably about 100 feet (about 30 meters). Recording, for a moment we heard 2-3 bullets that came from the right side of Trump, but from our left side. It was a very interesting fact that when the bullets went, one of the plumbers ("fork-lifts") who lifted up the speakers, measured the plumber and when the bullet measured them there, we thought that the "fire department" ( the firemen) shot the "shooter" (attacker) with water, but the fluid (liquid) fell everywhere, in the audience. After that we heard 2-3 more shots. When this happened, the whole assembly fell down to the ground. All the people have fallen down to the ground. The Secret Service told us "sit down, sit down". In a moment we all got up, but when we got up, another one from the secret service told us to stay down because there might be another shot. When the people heard that word, they all started running, started crying. There were children, people. It was a very scary scene because you didn't know what would happen next."
Video recording of the attack
"Being from Kosovo, that means in the war, I noticed that there were bullets. A friend of mine, Steve, didn't believe it. I said, Steven, sit down. I went and said, record it, see what's going on. I took out my phone, I saw Trump myself. Even when he (Trump) got up, I saw that he had blood. I told my friend, "They got him", meaning they caught him (they shot him), but we didn't know how bad the situation was. I tried to hold the phone as straight as possible. Then a helicopter arrived, I think it took Trump to a nearby hospital. But that moment was something very interesting, because when Trump (got up), he told them "wait, wait" in English. He got up and did the "fist bump". I don't know how he had that courage, how he did that work and when he raised his fist, the whole people came alive and they all shouted "Trump, Trump", "USA, USA". But at that moment, the secret service said there could be a second shooter. Then the panic started, we started running. All ground barridaks.
We started running. People crying, women with small children, everyone started crying, we started running... Fleeing the place, we went to where the attacker was. I also have a video from where the army was, the secret service, trying to climb onto the roof. The roads were blocked and they didn't let anything go back and we started walking towards the airport, about 12 kilometers, because there were no taxis, nothing.
Impact of the event
"Given the mass shootings happening in the United States, you get a sense of what's going to happen now. The first ended, but we were afraid that there would be another attacker. It is a very interesting feeling, like the war we experienced in Kosovo... We could not believe that this is happening. But meanwhile we understood that this happened. I had maybe for 20 minutes because I couldn't believe that I was there too"./VOA
