Gambling in Asia is an obsession that culminates in betting on when it will rain, and for this reason, to "protect" the population, casinos in China are illegal.
For the same reason, the Triads, Chinese mafia organizations, the reincarnation of ancient secret societies, today organized as capitalist multinationals, have decided to open them in border areas, creating a series of micro-Las Vegas with luxury resorts and brothels.
They were so successful that President Xi Jinping was concerned that the equivalent of 144 billion yuan was being squandered in “offshore” gambling dens. The crackdown was further intensified during Covid, given the draconian regime of feng chéng, the isolation imposed on all citizens.
But at that point, a new game went viral. The atavistic love of gambling, often associated with forms of fortune telling, has today syncretized with the cult of the internet.
Social media, WeChat, QR codes, cryptocurrencies have become magical new manifestations, the nature or functioning of which is not understood, but on which we rely in every aspect of life. Thus were created "Scam Cities", over three hundred, scattered along the Burmese borders with China and Thailand.
They are virtual casinos, online gambling centers, but they are also temples of new Internet sects, whose gurus seduce, deceive, promise love and wealth in exchange for ever-increasing offers or investments. A fraud that has become global and in comparison makes the Ponzi scheme look like child's play. The mechanism of the "City of Frauds", moreover, involves hundreds of thousands of people attracted by the mirage of a high-tech job and transformed into computer slaves.
The Burmese civil war was the ideal place for the spread of Rogue Cities. But once again, the warlords and the drug lords who control them in collusion with the Triads proved too greedy: defrauding Chinese citizens of billions of dollars and enslaving many more, especially the young and educated who were potentially useful to the Party, could not but provoke a reaction from the Party itself. And so, between May 2023 and January 2024, China cracked down on the rogue centers operating along its borders in northern Shan State. “Zero tolerance for the presence of ‘mafia families’,” was the headline in the official Chinese Communist Party media on February 1, 2024.
He announced a series of operations, some carried out in collaboration with the Burmese police and military, which had led to the capture and extradition of at least 45,000 people, including the leaders of the "four families" that controlled criminal activities. The operation was also the cover for a major intelligence operation into the military's involvement in centers of online fraud and organized crime.
In reality, what caused such a violent reaction was above all Chinese concern for the security of the China-Myanmar economic corridor between Yunnan and the Bay of Bengal. With the feudal fragmentation of the territory, the disappearance of any sign of the state, the regression of power to the tribal level, in fact, chaos has threatened the northern edge of that strip of territory, even more so after the fighting between ethnic militias and the Burmese army for the possession of Muse.
The campaign in northern Burma on the border with China has had another effect: it has shifted the focus of criminal operations to the southeast, to Karen State, on the Thai border.
A change of front that did not happen without bloodshed. It was precisely this, apparently, that led to offensives and counterattacks between the Burmese army and ethnic militias, which for a moment seemed like the beginning of the end for the junta.
Instead, everything was resolved with the military's reoccupation of the territories, aided by the countless changes in the Border Guard front (which also changes its name every time). Further proof of how the Burmese civil war is metastasizing into a gang war. / Adapted Pamphlet from Domani.it/
