Donald Trump's approval rating falls below the 40 percent threshold and reaches the lowest point of his second term, returning to levels recorded after the attack on the US Congress on January 6, 2021, one of the darkest moments of American democracy. According to the latest poll by The New York Times, the president's approval rating is hovering around 38-39 percent, while almost 60% of respondents disapprove of his job performance.

The main weight comes from a combination of foreign policy and economics. The war with Iran, waged jointly with Israel, has had a direct impact on energy prices: gasoline has risen to about $4 a gallon, a dollar more than before the conflict. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 77 percent of Americans attribute at least some responsibility for the price hike to Trump, with high percentages even among Republican voters.

The blow is immediate and politically sensitive. 58 percent of respondents say they would be less likely to support candidates who support the White House's line on Iran in the November midterm elections. Republicans' historic advantage on the economy is also shrinking: today the party is virtually tied with Democrats, whereas at the beginning of the term there was a much larger gap.

Other polls confirm this trend. The approval rating measured by CNBC is at its lowest level in two terms, with a noticeable deterioration in the management of the economy. Meanwhile, the Associated Press-NORC poll shows growing dissatisfaction among many of the groups that contributed to the 2024 victory, especially among young Hispanic men, who are increasingly skeptical of the government's ability to meet the cost of living.

The Trumpian base, on the other hand, remains largely loyal, but the president is losing ground among independents and Republicans who are not aligned with the Maga movement. This is not a physiological decline: for the first time in his second term, Trump seems vulnerable precisely on the economy and security, the themes that had supported his return to power. And when the promise of prosperity is undermined, support also tends to follow. / Corriere della Sera
