CNN poll: Most voters have positive views of Harris, Trump is considered too

About 46% of voters have a favorable view of Vice President Kamala Harris, but not of former President Donald Trump, according to initial results of CNN's national exit poll of voters in this year's presidential election, while a slightly higher percentage small – about 42% – hold a positive view of Trump, but not of Harris.

About 8% of voters nationally have unfavorable views of both candidates, up from 2020 but down from 18% in 2016.

Nearly half of voters say Trump, but not Harris, is too extreme, while about 36% say only Harris is too extreme, 8% say both candidates are, and 5% say neither is.

About half of voters say they would be optimistic or excited if Harris wins, while the rest say they would be worried or scared; these numbers are similar for views of a Trump victory. And similar stocks would be excited for a win by either candidate. But more than a third of voters say they would be particularly afraid of a Trump victory, compared with fewer than 3 in 10 for Harris.

CNN's polls for the 2024 general election include interviews with thousands of voters, both those who cast ballots on Election Day and those who voted early or were absent. This reach makes them a powerful tool for understanding the demographic profile and political views of voters in this year's elections. And their findings will ultimately be weighed against the ultimate standard: the election results themselves. However, exit polls are still surveys, with margins for error – meaning they are more useful when treated as estimates rather than precise measurements. This is especially true for the earliest exit poll numbers, which have not yet been adjusted to match the final election results.
