George Soros' Open Society Foundations are leaving the European Union almost entirely. They are cutting their European budget due to the fact that the European Union and the member countries themselves spend a lot of money on social problems such as human rights, freedom and social diversity.
The board of the foundation last Friday sent a letter to the beneficiary organizations about their decision - reports the Hungarian office of Radio Free Europe. The spokesperson of the Hungarian LGBTQ Association tells the Euronews reporter in Hungary that the official reason for this change is not clear to him.
" For me, the argument is a bit contradictory. It is one thing for the European Union to have various declarations, it is another matter how they are implemented. They refer to the actions of governments, but the Hungarian government does not do much for LGBTQ people, in fact it is against them.
But in terms of democracy itself, not only in Hungary, but also in other EU member states, it is not in the best condition," said Peter Hanzli, the spokesperson of the Hungarian LGBTQ Association.
Open society foundation resources that have been allocated to the EU will be spent in other parts of the world from next year.
The timing of this change is not yet clear and there is no information about the future of foundation funds in those EU countries, where the government does not pay much attention to the construction of an open society.
