United States President Donald Trump said he is considering sending Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Cuba to hold talks with the island's government, at a time when the Cuban economy is facing severe difficulties.
Trump said his administration has initiated contacts with Cuban authorities and that negotiations have already begun. According to him, the government in Havana is in a difficult economic situation and is seeking an agreement with the United States.
"Cuba is going to fall very quickly, by the way," Trump said during a telephone interview Friday morning with CNN's Dana Bash.
He mentioned the possibility that Rubio, who comes from a family of Cuban immigrants, could take a direct role in the negotiation process to assess the next steps in relations between the two countries.
"They want to make a deal, so I'll put Marco in there, and we'll see how that works out," Trump added, referring to Rubio.
The US administration has meanwhile increased economic pressure on Cuba. In January, Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on goods from countries that supply or trade oil with Cuba. The decision is intended to limit the island's energy resources and could worsen its energy crisis.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez condemned the decision and called it an aggressive act against Cuba and its population, warning that the measures could worsen living conditions.
Trump also stated that his administration is considering taking legal action against members of the Cuban government or Communist Party for violations that could constitute federal crimes under US law.
During an event at the White House, he also mentioned the situation in Cuba, suggesting that changes in the country could pave the way for Cuban-Americans to return to their country of origin.
The US administration continues to combine economic pressure with signals for negotiations, while the economic situation in Cuba remains a key factor in future developments between the two countries.
