The head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, announces that Sweden can join NATO during the month of July. On Thursday, Turkey ratified Finland's offer, leaving behind Sweden, the product of an ongoing dispute over the country's support for Kurdish groups and restrictions on arms exports, foreign media reported.
" My goal remains that after the Turkish elections, but before the Vilnius summit, we can also have the ratification of Sweden," said the Secretary General from the NATO headquarters in Brussels, referring to the alliance's annual meeting on July 11.
Stoltenberg insisted in an interview that Sweden could get its green light after Turkey's May elections. Turkey's relations with Sweden have become contentious ahead of the election, following a Koran-burning protest in Stockholm earlier this year.
