Tensions rise in Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan struggles to keep peace talks alive

As tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz, with ships being attacked and suspected of being seized by Iran, Pakistan is struggling to keep hopes of negotiations alive.

Yesterday, a possible second round of direct talks between the US and Iran failed. Donald Trump then announced that he would “extend” the ceasefire until Tehran came up with a “unified proposal.”

The negotiations were supposed to take place in Islamabad after talks earlier this month failed to produce an agreement. With the talks now stalled, Pakistan is struggling to keep the possibility of a diplomatic solution alive.

A Pakistani official, in comments reported by Reuters, said they were prepared for the talks and that everything was ready, until a rejection came from Iran.

"We had prepared everything. We were all prepared for the talks, the stage was set. If you ask me honestly, it was an obstacle that we did not expect, because the Iranians never refused, they were ready to come and join and still are ," the Pakistani official said.

The country's political and military leadership worked hard to convince the US to extend the ceasefire yesterday, officials told the AP news agency.

Similarly, over the past 24 hours, they have continued to work on both sides to prevent the talks from failing, Iranian state news said. In the Pakistani capital, police and troops remained on alert today along major roads, manning checkpoints.

Residents were forced to take longer routes after authorities restricted access to some parts of the city.

" We have not received any instructions to remove these barricades ," said police officer Mohammad Aslam, as he directed commuters to turn back and use alternative routes.

The British High Commissioner in the Pakistani capital has also met with the country's foreign minister to discuss ongoing developments./ SkyNews
