Another tragic event happened in Italy. Five workers lost their lives while working on the sewage system in the Palermo area. The accident at work happened in Casteldaccia, a town a few kilometers from the capital.
Another worker was intubated by medical staff and is in serious condition in hospital.
The seventh employee who was part of the team managed to raise the alarm and call the fire department. The victims were located in the tunnels of the waste water lifting plant and are suspected to have been asphyxiated by hydrogen sulphide.
"Amap", the entity that manages the water supply and sewerage network of Palermo and 53 other municipalities in the province, has had a shortage of staff and for years has transferred some services and uses either workers from private companies or temporary workers.
Of course, the causes are being investigated: at the moment there are two hypotheses: gas absorption or structural failure.
Meanwhile, several family members of the five dead workers have arrived at the scene of the tragedy. " It is a great tragedy. We are shocked ," said the mayor of Casteldaccia, Giovanni Di Giacinto. " Five young people who died for a piece of bread, unimaginable ," he said.
