United States President Donald Trump has made a new public statement on negotiations with Iran, confirming that the process remains at a standstill and leaving open the possibility of an agreement only if Washington's conditions are met.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he was willing to reach a deal "with whoever has the reins in Iran," underlining that the domestic situation in Tehran is unclear and tense.
" They are clashing among themselves, there are major internal divisions. In many cases they seem to be fighting for leadership ," he said, adding that these dynamics are complicating the negotiation process.
The US president stressed that the US "holds all the cards" and that the Iranian side can contact him at any time if it wants to resume dialogue. He also touched on Iran's latest proposals, which, according to him, were not sufficient.
" They gave us a document that was supposed to be better. And it's interesting that as soon as I canceled our delegation's trip to Pakistan, within 10 minutes we got a new document, much better. They offered a lot, but not enough, " Trump declared, emphasizing that the main issue remains the prohibition of nuclear weapons.
Regarding the ceasefire, Trump said he has not yet considered whether it will continue, leaving the further direction of the conflict unclear.
He also defended the decision to cancel a trip by his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Pakistan, where a new round of talks brokered by Islamabad was scheduled. According to Trump, the long trip and the lack of guarantees of a meeting with real decision-makers in Iran made this step unjustifiable.
" We're not going to spend 15 or 16 hours on a plane meeting people nobody's heard of. They wouldn't be meeting the leader of the country, just other intermediaries ," he said before departing on Air Force One from Florida.
The president added that negotiations will continue remotely, through telephone communications. " We will not spend hours traveling for documents that are not sufficient. We will deal with this over the phone and they can call us whenever they want ," he stressed.
At the same time, Trump reiterated that uncertainties over the power structure in Iran remain a major obstacle to reaching a deal, arguing that the lack of clear leadership makes any diplomatic progress difficult.
His statements confirm that negotiations between the US and Iran continue to remain far from a solution, while tensions in the region remain high and without a clear prospect of easing in the near term.
