Washington gives Athens weight in the region, Rubio receives Minister
Rubio with George Gerapetritis

At a time when geopolitical dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans are taking on new shape, the United States appears to be giving Greece a prominent role as a key partner in the region. This was also reflected in the 50-minute meeting between Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House, where the deepening of the strategic partnership between the two countries was sealed.

According to Greek diplomatic sources, the focus of the talks was the 6th Round of the Greece-US Strategic Dialogue, to be held in Athens in 2026, strengthening economic diplomacy, as well as cooperation in areas such as energy, maritime transport, artificial intelligence and high technology.

Another key point was the promotion of the IMEEC Economic Corridor as an alternative trade route of strategic importance, while Greece's active role in the reconstruction processes in Gaza was also emphasized. Washington, according to the same sources, considers Athens a stable and strategic center in the Eastern Mediterranean, appreciating its bilateral and trilateral cooperation with the countries of the region.

The meeting comes at a time when the US appears to be rebalancing and strengthening relations with allies it considers more stable and with regional weight. In contrast, Prime Minister Edi Rama's recent visit to the US passed without high-level meetings, raising questions about the current intensity of Tirana-Washington relations.
