Israel has confirmed that the brother of the perpetrator of the attack on a synagogue in Michigan was a commander in the Lebanese organization Hezbollah.
The attack occurred on Thursday when 41-year-old Ayman Mohammed Ghazali crashed his car into the Temple Israel compound in West Bloomfield Township, in the US state of Michigan.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), his brother, Ibrahim Mohammed Ghazali, was responsible for managing weapons operations in a specialized unit of Hezbollah's Badr Unit.
The IDF stated that this unit of the Lebanese organization was responsible for launching hundreds of rockets against Israeli civilians during the recent war with Iran.
According to reports, two other of Ghazal's brothers, a niece and a nephew were killed in an Israeli airstrike on March 5 in the town of Masghara in Lebanon, just days before the US attack.
Ghazali had entered the United States in 2011 as the husband of an American citizen and received American citizenship in 2016, during the presidency of Barack Obama, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.
On the day of the attack, he traveled about 60 kilometers from his home in Dearborn Heights, an area near Detroit with a predominantly Muslim population, to the Temple Israel synagogue, one of the largest synagogues of the Reform Jewish community in the US, which also operates a school and a kindergarten.
After crashing the car, which was filled with fireworks and gasoline cans, Ghazali exchanged gunfire with an armed security guard and then committed suicide by gunfire, while remaining trapped in the burning vehicle.
At the time of the attack, there were about 140 children, teachers and staff members inside the synagogue, but no one was injured thanks to the immediate response of the complex's private security service.
