Iranian leader Mojtaba Khamenei undergoes surgery in Russia after being injured in US airstrikes
Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reportedly been transferred to Moscow for surgery, according to Kuwaiti media quoted by the online edition of the British newspaper Daily Mail.
Khamenei, 56, is the son of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and is considered one of the most influential figures in the Islamic Republic's political and religious structures. He took over the country after his father was assassinated on February 28, in a development that shook Iran's political hierarchy.
According to reports, he was initially admitted to Sina University Hospital in Tehran after an airstrike that, according to sources, targeted Iran's top leaders during recent US and Israeli operations.
Due to his injuries, it was decided to transfer him abroad. According to the Al-Jarida agency, the Iranian leader's departure from Iran was organized as a highly secret operation, including his transportation on a Russian military plane to Moscow.
Reports add that the surgical intervention was reportedly offered personally by Russian President Vladimir Putin, while upon arrival in Russia, Khamenei was taken to one of the presidential residences, where, according to the same sources, he underwent a successful operation.
Meanwhile, recent statements by Donald Trump have further fueled speculation about the Iranian leader's condition. The former US president suggested that Khamenei may have suffered very serious injuries during the attacks and may even be "disfigured," without providing further details.
