Former United States President Bill Clinton told the House Oversight Committee that he had no knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein's criminal activities and that, if he had had information, he would have personally denounced him.
"If I had had any idea what he was doing, not only would I not have flown on his plane, I would have turned him in myself and led the call for justice for his crimes, not for favorable deals," Clinton said in her opening statement.
He added that, having grown up in a family that suffered violence, he would not have tolerated such behavior.
Clinton, who served as president from 1993 to 2001, admitted to traveling on Epstein's plane several times in the early 2000s after he left office.
The US Department of Justice has released millions of documents related to the Epstein case. Among them are photos of Clinton with women, with her face redacted. The release of these materials does not contain evidence of wrongdoing on his part.
Clinton has denied any wrongdoing and expressed regret for her association with Epstein.
"Even in retrospect, I didn't see anything that would have made me stop," he declared.
He stressed that the case only became public because, according to him, Epstein had concealed his actions for a long time. Clinton added that after Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008, he had long since cut off all contact with him.
