European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for a negotiated solution to the conflict with Iran, saying she is "deeply concerned" about the escalation of the situation in the Middle East.
During a visit to Australia, she declared that "it is of fundamental importance that we reach a negotiated solution that ends the hostilities that we are seeing," stressing that the conflict is endangering regional and global stability.
Alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra, Von der Leyen warned of the economic effects of the conflict, saying that "we all feel the knock-on effects on gas and oil prices, on our businesses and on our societies," while describing the Strait of Hormuz as a key point, emphasizing that it is "essential for energy supply lines around the world."
She also added that several European Union countries are preparing to contribute to a "mission" to protect this strategic sea route, once the conflict ends, underlining the importance of ensuring energy security and stability in international markets.
