The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has called on the American President, Joe Biden, and the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, to participate in the peace summit held next month in Switzerland.
The Ukrainian leader made this request through a video in English. He was shown standing near rubble in the heavily bombed eastern city of Kharkiv.
"It is asking world leaders who are not yet involved in global efforts for a global peace summit: President Biden, the leader of the USA, and President Xi, the leader of China. Please support the peace summit with your leader and your participation," he said.
Zelensky said leaders should participate because "the efforts of the majority of the world are the best guarantee that all commitments will be fulfilled."
He also said that he wants the leaders of countries "which Russia has not been able to deceive" to participate.
The conference on the war in Ukraine will be held at a luxury resort near Lucerne on June 15-16.
The Swiss government is hosting the event at the request of Ukraine.
Organizers have said they have invited 160 delegations, but Russia, which has launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has not been invited to attend.
Biden's presence has not been confirmed, while the organizers have said that part of the participants will be members of the G7, G20 and the BRICS group./ REL
