A large fire broke out this morning in the Eshtaol forest, in the mountainous area west of Jerusalem. Due to the large size of the fire and the risk of it getting out of control, Israeli authorities have declared a state of emergency.
The Palestinian group Hamas has published a message on Telegram calling on Palestinians to "burn everything they can: forests, mountains and the homes of Israeli settlers."
The same message states that Palestinian youth in the West Bank, Jerusalem and inside Israel have burned their cars as an act of protest, and that Gaza "expects the revenge of the free."
On social media, the fires have been dubbed “Flames of the Flood,” a reference to the name “Al-Aqsa Flood” that Hamas used for the October 7 attack. A Palestinian media outlet, Akhbar Filastin, has called for youth in the West Bank to burn down settler homes and set fire to grass around Israeli settlements with Molotov cocktails.
Another media outlet, "Jenin News," has called on young people to burn forests near occupied lands, calling the fire "an opportunity to harm Israelis."
According to Israeli media, police have arrested three people suspected of arson in the Jerusalem area. These fires are believed to be related to the blazes that are spreading in central Israel.
Many fire crews are working to stop the flames from spreading, but efforts are being hampered by strong winds and suddenly high temperatures.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that planes from Italy and Croatia will arrive soon to help extinguish the fires.
