It is worth noting that a draft proposal that appeared in the media a few weeks ago indicated an economic colonization. Or, in less technical terms, a total sale.
A minerals deal between Ukraine and the United States could finally be signed this Wednesday, after weeks of intense negotiations that at times turned acrimonious and temporarily hindered Washington's aid to Ukraine.
A source familiar with the matter told CNN that Ukraine expects to sign the natural resources agreement on Wednesday.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told Ukrainian television that the country's economy minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, was heading to Washington.
"We are finalizing the last details with our American colleagues. Once all the final details are finalized, I hope that the agreement will be signed in the near future, within the next 24 hours ," Shmyhal told the Ukrainian Telemarathon.
Shmyhal described the agreement as a strategic agreement to create an investment partnership fund.
News of the signing of the agreement on Wednesday was first reported by Bloomberg and the Financial Times.
The US and Ukraine have been trying to reach a natural resources deal that would give Washington access to Kiev's untapped mineral wealth in exchange for investment since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January.
CNN has reached out to the U.S. Treasury and the White House for comment. Trump has largely described the deal as Ukraine's "payback" for the aid the U.S. has provided to Ukraine since Russia launched its unprovoked, full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.
Details of the agreement have not been made public. However, Shmyhal said on Sunday that the agreement will not include aid provided before its signing.
" It is truly an equitable and beneficial international agreement on joint investments in the development and recovery of Ukraine between the governments of the United States and Ukraine ," he added on Wednesday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to sign the agreement during his trip to Washington in February, but the deal remained unsigned when the visit was cut short after a controversial meeting in the Oval Office.
It is worth noting that a draft proposal that appeared in the media a few weeks ago indicated an economic colonization. Or, in less technical terms, a total sale. If Ukraine were to accept the proposed terms and the agreement were to be signed, Kiev could be forced to hand over the keys to its extractive sector to Washington. And not only to him.
Because in the agreement that Donald Trump has proposed to Ukraine to continue supporting it militarily, it is not only about rare minerals: the "500 billion dollars" that the tycoon has asked Volodymyr Zelensky also includes other important strategic assets, such as ports and oil and gas infrastructure. Everything written in black and white in the draft of the preliminary agreement published by The Telegraph./ Pamphlet
