They ban TikTok so the public can focus there and forget all the corruption cases and government misconduct!
The Austrian newspaper Wiener Zeitung has dedicated an article to the closure of the TikTok app in Albania.
The newspaper writes that the blocking of TikTok was not a transparent process, adding that this decision was more of a political mechanism on the part of the government, given the fact that the closure of the application came just two months before the May 11 parliamentary elections.
According to "Wiener Zeitung", TikTok operates via VPN, while writing that the blocking came after a tragic event at a school in Tirana, where two students were involved in a conflict, and one of them stabbed a 14-year-old to death.
The newspaper also writes that all this was done to distract the public while calling it a tactic to achieve victory. According to the Austrian newspaper, behind it lies a corrupt connection between the government and criminal gangs.
"Between 2017 and 2019 alone, it is said that 1.6 billion euros were introduced into the real estate market in Albania. Most of it in cash. The money, which is thought to have been earned from drug trafficking, is laundered in this way and invested in properties ," writes Wiener Zeitung.

The app opens normally. The first video loads. But when you scroll down, no more videos appear. TikTok is blocked. This has been the reality for about three months for everyone trying to use the app in Albania.
Elind Selenica shows me his phone as we sit in a cafe in late May in the Albanian capital, Tirana. It only takes a few seconds for him to activate a VPN and get back to using TikTok. The VPN changes his phone’s IP address. Simply put: it looks like he’s in a different country.
The lockdown came after a tragic incident at a school in Tirana. Two students were involved in a conflict, which they had also developed through TikTok: in November 2024, one of them stabbed the other with a knife. The victim was only 14 years old. The Albanian government responded with a complete ban on TikTok throughout the country – so far, the only country in Europe to have taken such a step. While restrictions on TikTok are being discussed around the world, the Albanian government’s strict measure remains unique.
For Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, the Chinese app TikTok is directly to blame for the incident. "TikTok is like a street urchin in the neighborhood and we will expel this street urchin from our neighborhood for a year," he said as the reason for the blockade.

Alex thotë se pothuajse të gjithë rreth tij të rinj apo të moshuar, janë përshtatur menjëherë.
“Pothuajse askush që njoh nuk e konsideron ndalimin si diçka pozitive. Ka shumë mënyra si mund të investojë qeveria në të ardhmen e brezit të ri. Për shembull, përmes arsimit ose përmirësimit të infrastrukturës sociale”, tregon 21-vjeçari.
Sa seriozisht e ka politika shqiptare ndalimin, shihet edhe nga rasti i Erion Veliajt. Kryetari i Bashkisë së Tiranës dhe bashkëpartiak i Edi Ramës ndodhet në paraburgim që nga shkurti. Ai po hetohet për korrupsion dhe pastrim parash. Megjithatë, në llogarinë e tij në TikTok publikohen disa herë në javë video të reja me mesazhe politike.
Përndryshe: Ndalimi i TikTok-ut ndodhi dy muaj para zgjedhjeve parlamentare. Edi Rama dhe Partia Socialiste dominojnë në mediat tradicionale. Partitë më të vogla ankohen se gjatë fushatës zgjedhore nuk ftohen në emisione debatuale. Përveç kësaj, shpesh ka raporte për korrupsion politik. Për shumë ekspertë, fitorja e Ramës nuk ishte më një surprizë.
Partitë më të vogla mund të arrinin votuesit vetëm përmes fushatave në rrugë ose rrjeteve sociale. Për këtë arsye, ato e akuzuan qeverinë se ndalimi i TikTok-ut ishte bërë për arsye thjesht politike dhe oportuniste.
Ndalimi si bombë tymuese
"Por pse dikush që ndihet kaq i sigurt dhe e di që do të fitojë, do të përdorte një taktikë të tillë për të arritur një fitore që nuk i nevojitet?", pyet Daniel Prroni nga Instituti për Demokraci dhe Ndërmjetësim (IDM). Sipas tij, arsyet e vërteta gjenden diku tjetër.
Bëhet fjalë për shpërqendrim. "Ata e ndalojnë TikTok-un që publiku të fokusohet atje, dhe të harrohen të gjitha rastet e korrupsionit dhe sjelljet e gabuara të qeverisë", thotë Prroni.
Intervistën e zhvillojmë në qendër të qytetit. Rreth nesh ngrihen ndërtesa të reja shumëkatëshe, shumica prej tyre nuk janë ndërtuar për t’u shitur. Shumë prej tyre do të mbeten bosh.

Journalist Gjergj Erebara from the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network now jokingly calls Tirana the “Mafia Laundromat.” Even the child safety issues that the government claimed to address have faded with the TikTok ban.
"Neither violence among young people nor the safety of children have been resolved. The discussion has taken a completely different direction ," criticizes Prroni. It is still not known what happened in the case of the child's murder. The case has not been investigated.
The state is becoming increasingly autocratic.
Whether the TikTok ban restricts access to information and freedom of expression will now be decided by Albania's Constitutional Court. The case was heard in early June. Whether it is constitutional or not, for Prroni it conflicts with Albania's ongoing EU membership negotiations.
"Only countries with questionable stances on human rights have imposed total bans for reasons of public safety or morality," the expert says.
So far there has been no reaction from the EU, although the Digital Services Law would be a good model for regulation.
Overall, the atmosphere in Tirana seems tense. Many experts warn of an increasingly authoritarian state that can issue or ban things arbitrarily. Some of the votes from the May elections are being recounted, and a government is expected by September. Until then, TikTok here is mostly used via VPNs.
