Average salaries in our country have been increasing, especially in the last two years, but four sectors of the economy with the highest employment rates offer salaries to employees below the national average salary.

According to INSTAT data, in the last quarter of 2023, the average wage in the economy reached 75,025 ALL, with an annual increase of 13.7%, but wages for agriculture, construction, trade and industry employees were below this level.

In the last quarter of 2023, the average gross salary in agriculture reached the level of 49,140 ALL, with an increase of 15.8%, but its level was 65% of the average salary in the country. Wages in agriculture have grown at a faster rate than in other sectors of the economy, but due to the small base, the difference with the average wage continues to be the highest of all categories. However, this gap has narrowed by 1 percentage point over the course of a year.

Although construction work is well paid, official salaries in this sector are lower than the national average. Official data show that in the last quarter of the year, the average monthly gross salary in construction was ALL 58,387, with an annual increase of 14.4%, but this level was 22% lower than the average salary in the country.

Previous assessments by the International Labor Organization ILO show that the construction sector in our country suffers from a high level of informality in both employment and wages. Informality in employment in this sector reaches up to 60%, as official wage declarations continue to be much lower than real payments.

The trade sector offers an average monthly gross salary at least 19% lower than the national average salary. In the last quarter of 2023, the average salary in trade, transport and services was ALL 60,179, with an annual increase of 14.3%.

The industry sector also offers a salary 14% lower than the national average salary. In the fourth quarter of 2023, the average salary in this sector reaches 64,381 ALL from 75,025 ALL, which was the average salary.

Sectors that are offering wages lower than the average wage suffer from the gravity of sectors with higher wages, affecting the displacement of workers from these sectors to those with higher profits.

Agriculture is the sector most affected by this displacement, causing the labor force to decrease year after year as a result of the migration of young people abroad or to cities in sectors that have higher wages.

On the other hand, financial activities that offer the highest salary for employees have salaries 98 percent higher than the national average, information and communication offers salaries 53% higher than the national average, public administration offers 16% higher than the national average and real estate activity 10% more than the national average./ Monitor
