We as a society haven't yet learned to let go of our inner turmoil because we don't perceive it as a problem...
The commemoration of February 20, 1991 risks being reduced to a symbolic date with no real meaning for democrats and all those hoping for regime change as long as the toppling of Rama's "living bust" is demanded while the bust within the DP, that of Berisha, remains intact. The problem of toppling busts is not simply a political issue but mostly a psychological and social one. After 35 years, toppling the bust continues to be conceived as a physical act, not a cultural one.
We as a society have not yet learned to tear down the bust within ourselves because we do not perceive it as a problem. It has become part of our identity, our history, our moral justification. We are accustomed to seeing the bust of the opponent as a problem, perceiving it as an existential threat, but we neglect the bust within ourselves. We often project the bust of the opponent as evil that must be brought down at any cost without reflecting within ourselves whether we have brought down the bust within ourselves.
This is nothing more than a form of selective blindness where we consider the other's bust tyrannical, while the bust within us we call legitimate. However, if we do not dismantle the cult of the one within our structure, every call for overthrow outside of ourselves looks like a shift of power, not as a democratic transformation. As long as democrats do not find the strength and reason to overthrow the living bust within themselves, the mobilization to overthrow the opponent's bust remains an illusion, not to say hypocrisy. This is because not a few democrats but also disappointed socialists do not need to change the appearance of the bust but they need to break the culture of the cult of the individual that is not allowing this society to emancipate.
If the call of the Democrats is to end authoritarianism, it must begin with the liberation from the myth of the infallible leader, with the demolition of the pedestal within the Democratic Party. The invitation to topple the opponent's bust when in the meantime the bust within the DP remains intact in form and content risks remaining in a cycle where we do not kill the myth of the bust, but simply change its authors while leaving the system intact and calling this "change". Haven't we been doing this for 35 years?
If Democrats intend for February 20th to serve not only as a commemorative date but also as a moment of reflection and change, they must face an uncomfortable but answerable question: Have we changed the culture of power within the party or just the characters?
The problem is not simply an individual at the head of the government, the problem is the model of the relationship with power. As long as we see the leader as a savior or as an absolute enemy, we remain prisoners of the same logic that produces new “busts”. It is not the overthrow of the figure that brings democracy, but the overthrow of our dependence on the figure. This is precisely the reflection that has long been missing from the largest opposition force.
A society that replaces authorities without changing authoritarianism simply recycles the myth of the bust. Real change begins when democrats begin to give up the need for idols and demand rules, accountability, and institutions that stand above the individual. If the Democratic Party and with it all of Albanian politics do not find the courage to dismantle the cult of the individual within themselves, any battle against the “bust of the other” will remain a futile effort.
Democracy is not born from the replacement of figures, but from the construction of a new ethic of responsibility, where no one is above the institution and no leader is greater than the rule. Only then will February 20 cease to be a nostalgic memory and become a standard by which to judge ourselves.
