The era of Sali Berisha's return to the Democratic Party had no illusions, even among its participants, that we would have a "unification" or expansion of the opposition, let alone a quick return to power.
The lack of illusions came precisely from the great clash of 2021-2022, which brought not just a rift, but a traumatic division between the parties and groups that make up the opposition.
The Democratic Party that emerged from the 2021 elections had the largest popular and organizational mobilization since 2013 when it lost the elections to Edi Rama.
That popular mobilization did not come as a result of a brilliant strategy by the then leadership of the Democratic Party of Albania, or some convincing and winning team. It came as a union of will among opposition militants in the territory, a will that was based on a hope to rebuild a political force that was as inclusive as possible.
It should not be forgotten that calmly, Lulzim Basha, learning from previous defeats, managed to bring together many factors of the old and new right in the territory, openly and decisively rejecting a preliminary cake division with the LSI.
That 2021 mobilization, where the DP, although it had not yet become a party but a unified opposition movement, created a new connection in the territory. A connection, which must be said to have come as a skill of the characters who took charge of the DP branches in every corner of the country. For this reason, Lulzim Basha gave them added power, creating a "parallel" organization such as the college of mayors, who would have the power to choose the new team in the future.
So a real political energy was created, which yielded results in the elections of April 25, 2021. The victory of the DP over Edi Rama did not come, because the opposition did not have the plus factor needed to win. The narrative and the leadership.
Meanwhile, the real civil war in the DP did not occur on the grotesque scene of January 8, 2022, or in the elections where they ran against each other on March 6, 2022.
But the battle for territory, for the Democratic Party's base, which was built with difficulty, is a process that does not happen in a day.
This clash occurred because Sali Berisha knew that it had a very high cost, but he played hard like this, in the hope that this force would tremble and seize as much as possible.
But exactly the opposite happened; this is where the fatal split occurred. From then until today, Sali Berisha has not penetrated any of the best DP structures in the territory, starting from Tirana to the bastion cities.
This was best demonstrated by the 2023 elections, which are proof of this very reality. Berisha knew he would do this in the November 6 by-elections, so he did not field a candidate, however, those he supported came in third place.
What did the war that Sali Berisha started after the Non Grata declaration do? He gathered around himself a large part of those dissatisfied with Basha's leadership, in the hope that they would gain space in the reformation of the doctor. But as soon as the seizure of power in the DP happened, almost everyone was disappointed.
Of course, according to the proportion of space available in the Democratic Party, and the context. After all, the departure of, for example, a well-known name like Edmond Spaho or even Fedinand Xhaferri has its weight as a result of their long experience in the party, but the public is more affected by the dissatisfaction of Ilir Alimehmet and Aulon Kalasa. Although they were almost knightly rivals with Sali Berisha, they were pushed aside, comforting them that they would wait until next time.
But these young people did not accept this logic and are doing something, they are moving politically. The initiative to stir the pot has been taken by Ervin Saljanji.
But it seems that Berisha is less worried about Saljanji, Alimehmeti and Kalaja, because he can act towards them in the media like the master of scenarios that he is. The chances are that he, and only him, has been burned by Anila and Kamza, who even after being expelled is fighting a battle where she has nothing to lose. Meanwhile, the ground is eroding under Berisha's feet, not the opposition, which only benefits.
