Does Kosovo have sovereignty if the US withdraws recognition?
The answer is simple: the US is sanctioning Albin more than Putin, because Kosovo is a direct American project.
Unlike Russia, Kosovo was liberated, created, and declared independent thanks to the intervention of the US and NATO. Without their help, Albanians fought for over 1,000 years against Serbia, but were unable to create an independent state, nor to unite with Albania.
Today, Albin Kurti is risking destroying the long-term US project in the Balkans, paving the way for Russian influence in the region.
Does Kosovo have sovereignty if the US withdraws recognition?
It is clear that Kosovo cannot exist as a functional state if the US withdraws. After it, other Western allies such as Great Britain, Europe, or Israel would also change their stance.
Meanwhile, the other half of the world, led by Russia, China, India, and the BRICS countries, do not even consider Kosovo as a state on the map of international law.
So what would Albin Kurti do?
Would he be the prime minister of a state that does not exist or would he try to create an "underground" government, like Hamas, somewhere beneath the tunnels of Mitrovica?
The US did not punish Kosovo, but Kurti.
The statement from the US Embassy in Pristina clearly states: "The US has indefinitely suspended the Strategic Dialogue with Kosovo due to the Government's actions, which have increased tension and uncertainty."
"Unfortunately, Prime Minister Kurti's recent actions and statements have jeopardized the progress achieved over many years."
“We remain committed to advancing shared interests with the United States and the people of Kosovo.”
However, diplomatic isolation is a fact.
The US has cut off almost all communication with Kurti's unconfirmed government.
Kosovo, for the first time in many years, does not have an accredited American ambassador.
The EU has also imposed punitive measures:
• Suspension of IPA III funds (Instrument for Pre-Accession)
• Exclusion from high-level EU-Kosovo events
• Postponement or blocking of cooperation programs
• Freezing of the integration process and political support
Not coincidentally: only two countries are under Western sanctions: Kosovo and Russia.
On one side we have Vladimir Putin, a historical enemy of the West.
On the other hand, a provincial bajraktar like Albin Kurti, who, through ignorance and personal selfishness, is playing a dangerous game by undermining the US project in the Balkans.
For these reasons, the US is moving towards declaring Albin Kurti "Non Grata", as a measure similar to what has been taken against anti-American figures in Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia and most recently in Montenegro.
The US blacklist is expanding with politicians who, in the name of "sovereignty", have defied the West only to have their power eroded.
But in Kosovo they have forgotten one fundamental thing: Kosovo's sovereignty does not exist without the US and NATO.
Kurti's anti-American behavior has been constant with 4 American presidents: Bush, Obama, Biden, and most recently with the Trump administration.
Therefore, America has decided to drag Albin, but not to withdraw from Kosovo.
