The investigation showed that the whole event was related to drug trafficking, and then it was discovered that the owner of the pizzeria who was killed was the head of a drug organization.
In April 2020 the center of Strombeek-Bever in Belgium was rocked by shootings. The owner of a pizzeria, 42 years old, was shot dead inside the pizzeria. The perpetrator fled, but was arrested by the police in Merchtem a short time later. He had set fire to the vehicle in which the murder weapon was located, and then left on a bicycle.
The investigation showed that the whole event was related to drug trafficking, and then it was discovered that the owner of the pizzeria who was killed was the head of a drug organization.
After his death, his brother was placed at the head of the organization, while his wife held a secondary role for some time, until she was removed from the organization. In December 2020, a series of checks were carried out in the houses of the suspects.
This showed that the 12 members, mostly Albanians and Bulgarians, were importing and exporting cocaine from Strombeek-Bever. They traded at least 84 kilograms of cocaine.
While the trial for the drug group has ended, another trial has begun in Belgium. It is about the perpetrator of the murder of the owner of the pizzeria. He is an Albanian contract killer named Afrim Mema, 40 years old. Afrim Mema has been in prison since his arrest, awaiting trial. Mema admitted that he was hired as an assassin to kill the victim.
On Wednesday morning before the Leuven Assize Court a second preliminary hearing was held for him. During the session, much was discussed about the use of "Sky ECC" data during the trial. In fact, Mema was arrested before the "Sky ECC" talks came on stage.
Attorney General Ben Pieters was adamant with a "bold statement": "Take it off the table, we don't really need that information. The accused has already confessed."
Earlier in the file, the hearing had to be postponed for four months, as the defense had submitted at the last moment 267 pages of conclusions, including for "Sky ECC". The other parties wanted time to consider it. Despite Pieters' statement, the defense continued with a two-hour argument against the messages sent and intercepted through Sky ECC.
According to lawyers Kris Luyckx and Joke Bleys, these were obtained illegally. The defense also wanted to exclude one part, namely the report of forensic psychiatrist Ignaas Lindemans. He had conducted his investigation of the accused Mema in English, as he does not speak Dutch or French, and was assisted in all proceedings by an English interpreter.
However, under the Language Act, the defense raised questions about the expert's level of English. Also, it was announced that the three summoned witnesses, who are in prison in the United Kingdom, will be interrogated by video. On January 19, chairman Peter Hartoch will make a decision on the data from Sky ECC and the witness lists.
