A 19-year-old Albanian man has tragically lost his life at a construction site in London after falling from a height of six stories, an event that British authorities have described as avoidable.
The victim, Renols Lleshi, was working on the 12th floor of a building in the Acton area, west of the British capital. The incident occurred in July 2023, while he was helping to dismantle scaffolding on the roof garden.
According to investigations, the young man stepped on an unsafe ventilation cover, falling into the empty space from six floors and dying on the spot.
Health and Safety at Work (HSE) authorities found that the space had only been covered with plasterboard and roofing foam, materials unsuitable to guarantee the protection of workers.
It was also found that the roof garden area was not included in routine safety checks, which meant that the risk was not identified in time.
"Falls from height are one of the leading causes of death in the workplace. This was a completely avoidable incident that took the life of a young man," HSE inspector Natalie Prince said, according to The Sun.
Meanwhile, the victim's family has expressed shock at the loss, emphasizing that the fact that the event could have been prevented makes the pain even worse.
"We are devastated by the loss of Renols. Knowing that his death could have been prevented makes everything even harder for us," his father said.
The construction company "Jerram Falkus Construction Limited" has admitted responsibility for violating safety regulations when working at heights and has been fined over 42 thousand pounds, as well as being ordered to cover legal costs and additional penalties.
According to reports, the company ceased operations last month and is currently in administration.
