An illegal immigrant is to be deported from the UK for the fifth time after being found hiding in the back of a trailer.

Since 2017, Romeo Zani, an Albanian citizen, has repeatedly tried to enter the UK.

Newcastle Crown Court heard on Tuesday that Zani first became known to the Border Force nine years ago, when he confessed to entering the UK hidden in a lorry and working illegally.

Since then, he has been caught trying to enter the UK by various means, including on a yacht in Falmouth.

Zani, 32, spent a year in hiding and has also served prison sentences for his crimes. An indefinite deportation order has been issued for him.

Now, the illegal immigrant has been jailed and told he will be deported for the 5th time, after admitting to another violation of his deportation order.

Nicholas Worsley sentenced Zani to two years in prison for his 'flagrant attempt to evade deportation.' "This will be the fifth time you have been deported from the UK," Worsley added, stressing that this crime undermines the fabric of society and enables criminality.

Prosecutor Michael Bunch told the court that Zani was found in a closed trailer heading towards the Nissan factory in Sunderland.

He confessed to having traveled from Albania to Belgium, where he paid someone £5,000 to get him into the United Kingdom.

Bunch said Zani claimed he made the illegal trip because 'his life was in danger.' Mark Harrison, the defendant's lawyer, said he would "return to Albania even though he claims it is not a safe place to live."

He did not properly set foot on UK soil, he was arrested hiding in a truck.

He chose the UK because he has friends and extended family here. He understands he can't go back.

The court heard that Zani was first questioned by authorities in August 2017, when he confessed to entering the UK in the "back of a lorry".

He admitted that he had been working illegally, was not afraid to return to Albania and signed a voluntary departure order, which meant he was deported from Britain in December 2017.

Zani re-entered the country and was arrested in January 2018, then convicted in December 2018 at Bristol Crown Court for offences including possession of false identity documents, conspiracy to possess class B drugs and money laundering.

He was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

On 11 January 2019, he became the subject of an indefinite deportation order and left the United Kingdom for a second time on 7 March 2019.

Two years later, in January 2021, Zani returned to the UK and was identified as a person returning in breach of a deportation order, but was then “hiding” and categorised as a fugitive for over a year.

On August 27, 2023, he was arrested by Bedford Police. Then, in January 2024, he was arrested by West Yorkshire Police, and an asylum claim was launched.

The application was rejected and, on 3 May 2024, he was deported from the UK for the third time. This was the first breach of the deportation order.

Less than a year later, on April 13, 2025, Zani was found on a yacht in Falmouth and two days later was convicted of a second breach of the eviction order at Cornwall Magistrates' Court.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison for the offence and, on 14 August, was deported from the UK for the fourth time.

On December 12 last year, he returned to Britain and was found hiding in a trailer heading to the Nissan factory in Sunderland.

He has been sentenced to two years in prison and will be deported for the fifth time for his third violation of the deportation order. /Adapted from Daily Mail/
