The Portuguese Ruben Saraiva accused of murdering businessman Ardian Nikulaj in Shengjin has refused to become an associate of justice.
Extradited to Albania from Morocco since the end of 2023, Ruben Saraiva was questioned today for about 2 hours at the Local Police Directorate in Lezhë, in the presence of the two prosecutors of the case, Erjon Shehaj and Françesk Ganaj.
During the conversation with the Portuguese, the representatives of the prosecution body are said to have offered him cooperation in exchange for easing the criminal charges, but the Portuguese has denied his involvement in the serious incident in Shengjin. According to the sources, the investigators have addressed a series of questions related to the investigation of this case.
Among other things, he has accepted the acquaintance with Edmond Haxhina, where, in addition to his presence on vacation in Albania, he has claimed that they had planned to plant narcotics.
At the request of the defense lawyer appointed by the Court to maintain the security of the Portuguese citizen, Ruben Saraiva was sent to prison 313 in Tirana, where he is waiting to face justice.
Investigations related to the murder of businessman Ardian Nikulaj continue from the Prosecutor's Office of Lezha, which is awaiting the decision on the extradition of 3 British citizens and the suspected mastermind of this murder, citizen Edmond Haxhia. The court session in Britain for the persons charged by Albanian justice is expected to be held in March.
The murder of businessman Ardian Nikulaj was in the wake of the chain of revenge that the victim's family has with another tribe, a conflict that has produced many victims over the years.
We recall that in his testimony a month ago, he declared before the Lezha police that he was in Albania for vacation and had nothing to do with the murder. The Portuguese was extradited to Albania on December 31, 2023, following the decision of the Moroccan Court which accepted the request of the Albanian authorities.
Execution of Ardian Nikulaj
Nikulaj was executed on April 19, 2023 this year while he was sitting inside his business in Shengjin, when the Portuguese in a spacesuit entered and shot several times with a pistol, leaving him dead on the spot.
After the event, the English who were in the role of observers left Rinas and while the executioner Ruben Saraiva went by land first to Greece, then to Malta and the final destination was Morocco where he was arrested.
Nikulaj's murder followed other criminal events which are still without a perpetrator.
In July of this year, Nikolin Lekstakaj was executed in Balldre, Lezhë, while on December 4, Etjan Nikulaj, the son of Ardian Nikulaj's uncle, was executed with a volley of bullets, while he was driving his ML off-road vehicle on the Lezhë-Milot road axis. The main track of the investigations is that of blood feud between the Nikulaj and Lekstakaj tribes.
Who was Ardian Nikulaj?
Nikulaj was a well-known figure in the area, as he was a businessman in the field of hotels and tourism, but he was also politically active. He was a candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the general elections of 2021.
He was the number 1 candidate on the list of the Social Democratic Party for Lezha where he received 97 votes.
In the decriminalization form he sent to the CEC at the time, the 50-year-old claimed that he was sentenced to 4 months in prison for possession of weapons without a permit on November 24, 2003, and 3 years later, on December 1, 2006, to a fine for forgery.
To the question of whether he has ever been detained or arrested by law enforcement bodies for committing a criminal offense, Nikulaj answered yes, but did not provide clarifications as he wrote "I don't remember the details".
He was also part of the City Council of the city. Nikulaj was born on October 31, 1972 in Lezhë. He lived in Shengji.
