Global crackdown on the mafia: 42 arrested in France, cartel bosses overthrown

In the last 24 hours, the fight against organized crime has entered a new international phase. The operation in Marseille, developments in Mexico and Europol's global actions show that states are increasingly responding with joint investigations and coordinated strikes against mafia networks.

The fight against organized crime appears to have entered a new international phase. Within 24 hours, authorities in France, Mexico and, through Europol, in 71 countries have carried out operations that paralyze drug, money laundering and environmental crime networks, sending a clear message: the era of impunity is coming to an end.

Major operation against “DZ Mafia” in Marseille

In France, police launched a large-scale operation against the drug ring known as the “DZ Mafia ,” a criminal organization operating in Marseille and surrounding areas.

The operation followed an investigation that had lasted more than a year and included raids in several departments, including Bouches-du-Rhône, Var, Vaucluse and Gard. As a result:

42 people were arrested, including key leaders and a lawyer suspected of being an accomplice.

French authorities identified as the ringleaders: Amine O. (“Mamine”), Gabriel O. (“Gaby”) and Mahdi Z. (“La Brute”).

They are accused of leading a criminal organization, drug trafficking, attempted murder, money laundering and business extortion.

Investigators suspect that profits from cocaine and cannabis trafficking were invested in real estate and businesses, a classic money laundering scheme of the modern mafia. Their fight for territory in 2023 turned Marseille into a battlefield, leaving behind 49 victims, a figure that alarmed not only public opinion, but also the French state.

A network that was born during the pandemic

According to investigations, the “DZ Mafia” network was formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in the La Paternelle social neighborhood in Marseille. The group initially controlled local traffic, but then expanded and entered into a bloody turf war with a rival organization.

Cartels in Mexico under pressure

At the same time, important developments are also taking place in Latin America. Following the death of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho”, two senior leaders of the organization have announced that they will plead guilty in American courts. They are Erick Valencia (“El 85”) and Abigael González (“El Cuini”). Their surrender to American justice is expected to open the black box of the CJNG’s finances and international connections, significantly weakening the cartel considered one of the biggest drug threats in the United States.

Europol global operation

In parallel, Europol has coordinated an international operation against economic and environmental crime networks. The operation, codenamed “Custos Viridis” , involved authorities from 71 countries on five continents and resulted in 1,048 checks, 337 arrests, the seizure of 127,000 tonnes of illegal waste and the confiscation of around €10 million. The operation revealed another side of organised crime: one that does not sell drugs, but poisons the environment and launders money through the illegal waste trade, a billion-dollar market.

A global war against the mafia

The Marseille operation, developments in Mexico and Europol's international actions show that the fight against organised crime is no longer a local issue. Mafias today operate across borders, while states are responding with joint investigations, intelligence sharing and coordinated international operations.

The events of recent days clearly show that the attacks on criminal structures are intensifying and are increasingly affecting their leaders. In a world where drug trafficking, money laundering and economic crime are linked in global networks, the fight against the mafia seems to have entered a new phase. If the past has seen organized crime as a shadow that follows the legal economy, the future seems to be building it as a primary objective of global security alliances.

Global operation against the mafia/ Albania on the list: SPAK, Antimafia and Germany launch new strikes

But while operations are hitting France and Mexico, sources close to the Special Prosecution Office indicate that new coordinated strikes are expected in Albania in the coming days. The Italian Antimafia and German justice, in close cooperation with SPAK and BKH, have finalized several investigative files that are expected to lead to the arrest of Albanian citizens involved in international drug trafficking and money laundering networks.

Now, sources speak of a new, more coordinated phase. The recent visit of German rapporteur Peter Beyer to Tirana and his meeting with SPAK head Klodian Braho signal that Berlin is seeking tangible results in the fight against drug cartels, which the opposition describes as being linked to high-level figures. The expectation is that the new operations will bring to justice not only the perpetrators, but also the financiers and leaders of the networks operating between the two shores of the Adriatic and beyond in Europe. /Pamphlet
