The Ecuadorian National Police has arrested in the Santa Elena province Jakimiec Tomasz, known by the nickname "Polaku", a person internationally wanted for illegal drug trafficking.
The news was confirmed today by Ecuador's Interior Minister, John Reimberg, who published footage from the police operation and photographs of the luxury residence where the arrest was made.
According to the authorities, the operation codenamed "Warsaw" was carried out by specialized units of the National Police and aimed to crack down on structures involved in international drug trafficking.
According to Minister Reimberg, Tomasz, 48, is a Polish citizen who also holds Ecuadorian citizenship. An international arrest warrant had been issued against him by Interpol for trafficking in controlled substances.
Preliminary investigations indicate that he is suspected of playing a key role in an international criminal network that was involved in transporting large quantities of drugs from Ecuador's main ports to European countries.
Links to international criminal groups
Ecuadorian authorities claim that the arrested man had links to various criminal organizations, including Albanian mafia groups, Colombian armed organizations, as well as the Ecuadorian criminal groups Los Lobos and Los Choneros.
According to investigators, "Polaku" served as a strategic link for coordinating drug trafficking activities between organizations operating in various countries in Latin America and Europe.
Weapons seized during operation
During the police intervention, agents seized two firearms, which were administered as material evidence within the framework of the investigations.
After his arrest, Tomasz was made available to judicial authorities for the continuation of legal proceedings.
"There is no place for criminals and the economies they try to feed," said Interior Minister John Reimberg, commenting on the outcome of the operation.
