The Guardia di Finanza of the Arezzo Command has conducted a wide-ranging operation in the territory, which has so far led to the arrest of two people, including an Albanian internationally wanted by a European arrest warrant.
The checks were focused on the areas of Cavriglia and San Giovanni Valdarno. According to authorities, a 60-year-old Italian man was under investigation for drug-related offenses, while the arrested Albanian was on the run and wanted for the same charges.
The arrests were carried out independently of each other. According to sources, the Albanian had previously managed to evade the execution of a detention order.
Meanwhile, during a search of the Italian's apartment, over 1 kilogram of marijuana was seized.
In another episode related to the operation, during a roadside check in San Giovanni Valdarno, a vehicle with two Albanians was stopped. Preliminary checks showed that the passenger, around 40 years old, had numerous criminal records for drug trafficking, while the driver of the vehicle displayed suspicious behavior, hesitating to provide personal information and documents.
Due to these suspicions, the authorities carried out in-depth identification through photographs and fingerprints, revealing that he was a wanted person, convicted since 2015 and subject to a European Arrest Warrant.
According to the investigation, he still had to serve a sentence of 2 years and 7 months in prison, given by the Court of Florence for drug trafficking. To evade justice, he had changed his surname to use that of his wife in Albania, which had enabled him to move between Italy and Albania for years without being stopped.
After notification of the Arezzo Prosecutor's Office and the central authorities, the order to serve the sentence was executed against him and he was transferred to the Arezzo prison.
