Among the 500, they placed newspapers/ The scheme of how Georgians cheated

A Georgian citizen was arrested today after, through a fraud scheme, he and two others managed to steal significant sums of money from currency exchange points in Albania.

According to what is reported, the three suspects demanded a cut of 500 euros in the exchange. After receiving the money, they would count it, seal it in an envelope and hide it in their bag.

When the shop owner insisted on verifying the money, they handed him another envelope containing a wad of real money at the beginning and end.

Specifically, at the beginning and at the end of the envelope, there was a 500 euro note, while the rest of the envelope was filled with newspaper clippings of a size and shape similar to real money. This created the illusion that the envelopes were the same, and the exchange clerk could think it was the same amount of money.

The latest case in Shkodër where 140,000 euros were stolen is part of a series of frauds that have affected exchanges in Albania. Before that, a similar incident happened in the "New Market" area in Tirana and another in Elbasan.
