Four members of an Albanian family were found dead in their home in Lucca, Tuscany, Italian authorities have announced, as a result of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.
The victims are a 48-year-old man, his 43-year-old wife and their two children, 22 and 15 years old, all of Albanian origin, reports Correre della Sera.
The incident was discovered on Wednesday evening, around dinner time, when the head of the family's brother, worried after not receiving any answers to his calls, went to the family's three-story apartment on Via Galgani.
After receiving no response from inside, he notified the carabinieri.
When the police entered the house, they found the table set and the four bodies on the floor. The man who had raised the alarm lost consciousness a few moments later due to exposure to the gas and was rushed to the Cisanello hospital in Pisa, where he is in critical condition.
Two Carabinieri officers who first intervened suffered mild symptoms of poisoning, but were not in danger of life. They managed to leave the apartment in time and raise the alarm for the emergency services.
According to preliminary investigations, the most likely cause of the tragedy is a faulty boiler, which may have caused the leakage of carbon monoxide, an odorless and invisible, often deadly gas.
The mayor of Porcari, Leonardo Fornaciari, arrived at the scene and expressed his sorrow for what he described as a "tragedy that has deeply affected the entire community . "
"It's difficult to find words in the face of such a great loss," he said, adding that the city is united in support of the victims' families and friends.
Investigations to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident are still ongoing.
