Erjon Rameta

Among the most serious episodes are the bomb explosion near the "Poseidon" pub in November 2019 and the January 2020 attack on the "Il sorriso di Stefano" day care center for the elderly, which belonged to the "Telesforo-Vigilante" group.

Italian police are deepening their investigations into the gun attack that occurred a few days ago in the parking lot near the "Via Ugo Iarussi" park in the city of Foggia, where two passersby were injured. At the center of the incident is an Albanian and an Italian, both arrested by the authorities and with serious criminal records.

According to Italian media, the Albanian involved is 37-year-old Erjon Rameta, also known by the nickname "Antonio the Albanian", a name known to Italian investigators due to his criminal history.

Rameta, along with a peer from Foggia with the surname Basto, was arrested on charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of a weapon, after the exchange of gunfire that caused panic in the area frequented by families and children.

According to the reconstruction of the carabinieri, the incident occurred on the evening of May 10, when a conflict between several people escalated into the use of firearms inside the park on Via Iarussi. The shooting left two passersby, a couple who happened to be in the area, injured in the legs.

Italian authorities say police were initially notified of a foreigner claiming to have received death threats from an acquaintance in the Penny Market parking lot on Via San Severo. But as soon as patrols arrived at the scene, officers heard gunshots coming from a nearby public park.

Erjon Rameta was stopped about 40 meters from the scene of the collision, while the other suspect was arrested a little later, also thanks to information provided by several passersby. During the searches, police seized two pistols with erased serial numbers, which are suspected to have been used during the exchange of fire.

The investigating judge then confirmed the arrests and ordered the suspects to be held in prison.

Rameta's name has appeared several times in investigative and judicial files in Italy in recent years. In July 2025, he was arrested along with 20-year-old Leonardo Russo after a chase through the streets of Foggia, which ended with the seizure of a 9mm Beretta pistol hidden in a building in the city center.

According to reports, the two were stopped around 07:00 in the morning, while riding a T-Max scooter on Via Guido D'Orso. After parking the vehicle on Via La Piccirella, they attempted to run away towards a building. During the chase, one of them threw away his gun, which was later recovered by the police.

For that episode, Rameta was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison after a shortened trial. Investigators raised questions about why two people with serious criminal records were moving around the city armed in the early hours of the morning.

However, the most serious criminal record linked to the 37-year-old Albanian remains that of the explosives explosions that rocked Foggia during 2019-2020. Rameta was arrested in April 2020 and later sentenced to 6 years in prison for two attacks carried out using mafia methods.

Among the most serious episodes are the bomb explosion near the "Poseidon" pub in November 2019 and the January 2020 attack on the "Il sorriso di Stefano" day care center for the elderly, which belonged to the "Telesforo-Vigilante" group.

Italian investigators have consistently considered Rameta to be close to the circles of the "Società Foggiana", a criminal organization operating in the Foggia area. However, so far there are no elements that directly link the latest incident to organized crime.

Meanwhile, investigations into the assassination continue and authorities are trying to uncover the motives of the conflict that led to the exchange of fire, as well as the relationships between the people involved.

The incident has once again raised concerns about security in the city of Foggia, as the shooting occurred in an area filled with families, women and children, causing panic among citizens.
