In Kefalonia, allegations circulated of a lack of emergency staff and delays in medical intervention during efforts to save 19-year-old Myrto.

The tragic event of 19-year-old Albanian Myrto in Kefalonia has shocked public opinion, while her father has recounted, amidst pain, the moments and doubts about what happened in the last hours of the girl's life.

"I got sick, I couldn't. They destroyed me. These topics destroyed my 'next day', they destroyed my interest in existing," he describes in a trembling voice, referring to the event that led to the loss of his daughter.

According to him, it all started with a contact on social media. "They brought someone, he met him through Facebook, he says he's from Athens and he's coming to Kefalonia for Easter and they're going to find him a room and they're going to go and book him a room ," he told ANT1.

The father insists his daughter had nothing to do with substance use. "My child was taken, my child had nothing to do with this. Her friend said this Myrto didn't drink half a glass of beer. She didn't drink anything. What substances?" he declared.

In his confession, the 19-year-old's father also describes his personal pain over the loss. "I can't. Is there anything worse that could happen to me? To talk to my child all night, to sit on the balcony and talk to my child all night. To confuse God, to confuse my fate. What a disaster this is that happened to us. We had a miracle from God. I had an angel, an earthly angel," he added.

He leveled accusations at those involved, claiming that the incident was planned.
“They brought someone, she met him through Facebook. He says he’s from Athens and he’s coming to Kefalonia to celebrate Easter and they find a room for her and go and book it. Then he played a trick on her: ‘Did you find me a room? I found you one’. One that is neutral. We don’t know what it is and then (ed.) he said ‘I don’t have money, I’ll give you cash, lock the room for me, because I don’t have a card in my phone’. And he locked my child in the room to help her. He was close to the other two and, since they were ‘standing tight behind her’ and my daughter wouldn’t give up, they found this way.”

Meanwhile, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis rejected claims of a shortage of doctors in the emergency room of the Kefalonia hospital, where the 19-year-old was taken.

"Regarding the case of the unfortunate Myrtos from Kefalonia and the complaints about the lack of doctors in the emergency departments, I spoke a while ago with the Commander of the 6th Regional Emergency Department, who investigated the incident by speaking with the Hospital Commander as well as the director of the nursing service and the emergency department staff who were on duty at the time.

Shortly before 05:00, the EKAB ambulance entered the hospital with a siren. The hospital health workers immediately understood the seriousness of the incident. The rural doctor on duty was the first to contact and in less than a minute and a half, the cardiologist on duty was in the emergency room, and in less than 7 minutes, the anesthesiologist on duty. All necessary efforts were made (CPR, intubation, adrenaline administration and other medications) but unfortunately Myrto had arrived at the hospital with her last breath and it was not possible to save her. I express my sincere condolences to her family ,” he wrote.

On the island of Kefalonia, there were allegations of a shortage of emergency staff and delays in medical intervention during the efforts to save 19-year-old Myrto. However, hospital sources have dismissed these rumors, stressing that medical personnel reacted from the very first moments to keep her alive.

According to the same sources, the girl was transported to Kefalonia Hospital shortly before 05:00 in the morning by an EKAB ambulance, after she was found unconscious in the central square of Argostoli. It is suspected that she had been left there earlier, in a semi-conscious state, by the three accused persons.

When she arrived at the emergency room, the 19-year-old was unconscious. The medical team intervened immediately, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about an hour and intubating her in an attempt to bring her back to life. Despite intensive efforts, doctors were unable to save her.

According to preliminary data, she suffered a cardiac arrest. The exact causes of death are expected to be determined by the forensic examination being carried out in Patras. Initial findings have identified pulmonary edema, while toxicological and histological analyses are expected to provide more answers on the circumstances of the event.
