Two Albanians have been arrested in Italy, suspected of having converted a warehouse into a large cannabis greenhouse with around 1,920 plants.
The police operation took place between the provinces of Monza and Bergamo, as part of a long-term investigation into drug trafficking inside and outside Italy. At the center of the investigation was a 43-year-old Albanian, suspected of being part of a structured criminal network dealing in the distribution of cocaine and marijuana.
The initial search was carried out at his apartment in Brugherio, where over 7 kilograms of marijuana, divided into packages, ready for sale, were seized in a space adapted as a warehouse. This discovery led investigators to another lead, which was linked to a warehouse rented by the same person in the Ubiale Clanezzo area, in Bergamo.
During the search of this premises, the police also discovered 28 kilograms of marijuana, part of it packed in bags and the rest in the process of drying and preparing for the market.
The bulk of the criminal activity was discovered on the lower floor of the warehouse, where two premises equipped as professional greenhouses had been set up, with lighting, ventilation, irrigation and humidity control systems. In total, 1920 cannabis plants cultivated under controlled conditions were found there.
During the operation, in a space used as a temporary residence, another Albanian, 40 years old, without a residence permit in Italy, was found. According to the investigations, he is suspected of being the 43-year-old's main collaborator, engaged in the maintenance of the warehouse and in the process of cultivating and processing the narcotic substance.
Both were arrested in flagrante delicto and charged with production and possession of drugs with intent to distribute. Various equipment used for the cultivation and packaging of cannabis, including heat lamps, chemical fertilizers and packaging materials, were also seized at the scene.
Italian authorities are continuing their investigations to uncover possible links of this activity to other international drug trafficking networks.
